The Virgin Birth of Jesus Old Testament Fulfilled Prophecies The Virgin birth of Christ is an actual Historical fact. God came (in the sinless form of Jesus) into the earth "HE" created. No other event in the past has had so much impact out side of Calvary where Christ paid the price for our transgressions. Seven hundred years earlier, this was prophesied by the prophet Isaiah and it came about just as predicated in (Matthew 1:22, 23) In Isaiah 7:14, we take notice what the prophet Isaiah said about this male child or "Son". He prophesied that Jesus Christ would be born of a "Virgin." The word says "Therefore the Lord Himself shall give you a sign: Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and call his name Immanuel. The prophet Isaiah prophesied that this male child WOULD BE INCARNATE. (Isaiah 9:6) "For unto us a child is born unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, THE MIGHTY GOD, THE EVERLASTING FATHER, the prince of peace. THE GOSPEL INTRODUCTION OF JESUS I read about Jesus in the four gospels of the New Testament. In their narratives of his birth, Matthew and Luke call him the virgin-born Savior, the Lord Christ Jesus, the Holy One, the So of the Most High, the Son of God, and Immanuel, which means "God with us." Change King Lear
Why is change inevitable? Why is it feared by many but then embraced with open arms by others? Change is the cause to be different, the process or result of altering. And although changes may be difficult and problematic, they often DO bring rewards to those who undergo them. But that doesnââ¬â¢t mean every change has a happy ending. Students, friends, Iââ¬â¢m here before you today to discuss with you the concept of change and its results, and with the help of arguably the most influential writer in English literature ââ¬â William Shakespeare ââ¬â and his play ââ¬ËKing Learââ¬â¢, as well as the movie ââ¬Å"Life as a Houseââ¬â¢ and the famous Bob Dylan song ââ¬ËThe Times They Are a Changinââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢. With these texts, Iââ¬â¢m going to distinguish and expose the outcomes and arduousness of change. The natural order ââ¬â or in other words, the physical universe considered as an unchanging structure of life ââ¬â in King Lear is absolute and when pushed, it pushes back. The most obvious example where the natural order is changed is at the beginning of the play when King Lear divides his Kingdom between his daughters. Regan and Goneril represent King Learââ¬â¢s sinister attitude at the start with traits such as cruelty and greed. Their deception is seen when the two daughters use exaggerations of love to deceive the King for power. Goneril claims she loves her father, ââ¬Å"As much as child eââ¬â¢er loved, or father found; a love that makes breath poor and speech unableâ⬠. But youngest daughter Cordelia ââ¬âwho represents the softer, purer nature of King Lear after he experiences an inner change- is seen to rebel against Lear by claiming her love as ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ according to my bond, no more nor less. â⬠This scene spins the ââ¬Ëwheelââ¬â¢ of change, beginning the random suffering of the members of the kingdom and creates the dire repercussions that follow. Bob Dylanââ¬â¢s ââ¬ËThe Times They Are a Changinââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ states ââ¬ËDonââ¬â¢t speak too soon for the wheelââ¬â¢s still in spin and thereââ¬â¢s no tellinââ¬â¢ who that itââ¬â¢s naminââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ which reinforces the metaphor seen in King Lear that entails how change is happening continually, without word of who it will affect and that once one change comes the ââ¬Ëwheelââ¬â¢ will continue to ââ¬Ëspinââ¬â¢ and will just keep on bringing more change, both good and bad. The continuing chain of change is reflected in ââ¬ËLife as a Houseââ¬â¢ when not only the two main characters ââ¬â George and Sam ââ¬â are affected by the change of their relationship and their journey of inner change, but when the whole community are affected by change also. When George is admitted into hospital, the whole neighbourhood changes their opinion of him as the town nuisance and begin to provide their time and service to ensure his dream of building a house is finished. This is shown through camera shots moving amongst those working on the house. The husband of Georgeââ¬â¢s ex-wife also goes through some inner changes shown through costume changes and changes in his body language. The once ââ¬Ësnobbyââ¬â¢ business man becomes more of a laid-back family guy when he realises he may lose both his wife and kids if he doesnââ¬â¢t change; creating a sense that his family is his reward for changing himself for the better. ââ¬ËThe Times They Are a Changinââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ implies that ââ¬Ëhistory is in the makingââ¬â¢; that a change is coming whether you are ready for it or not. A line in his first stanza reads ââ¬ËAccept it that soon youââ¬â¢ll be drenched to the boneââ¬â¢, which is seen as an extended metaphor of ââ¬Ëwaterââ¬â¢, where the water represents change. Change is eternal; just as water is. It will never cease to exist and like a flood, it will come whether predicted or not, sweeping away those who are not prepared for it; for if youââ¬â¢re not riding the ââ¬Ëwaveââ¬â¢ of change, youââ¬â¢ll find yourself submerged in it. The line ââ¬ËThen you better start swimming or youââ¬â¢ll sink like a stoneââ¬â¢ is used to further enforce the outcome of life is you donââ¬â¢t adapt to change; that these ââ¬Ëchangesââ¬â¢ will drown you. This metaphor of ââ¬Ëwaterââ¬â¢ is not only representing change, but also the process of change itself. Bob Dylan shows this through his lyrics that the journey undertaken to stay ââ¬Ëafloatââ¬â¢ may be difficult, but brings rewards and happiness to those who undergo them successfully, as says in his words ââ¬ËFor the loser now will be later to winââ¬â¢ and ââ¬ËThe slow one now will later be fastââ¬â¢. During the movie ââ¬ËLife as a Houseââ¬â¢, both the father George and the son Sam jump off a cliff ââ¬â at different stages of the movie ââ¬â and plunge themselves into the ocean. The ocean symbolises change, and their jump represents their willingness to take the leap of faith into it regardless of the risk to change their life. Both of these characters have undertaken many hard times during their life, whether it be depression, losing their job or an extreme medical condition, but throughout it all they still manage to stay ââ¬Ëafloatââ¬â¢ and embrace change into their lives; letting it alter them as they become new people. Unlike Bob Dylanââ¬â¢s song and ââ¬ËLife as a Houseââ¬â¢, ââ¬ËKing Learââ¬â¢ perspective on change doesnââ¬â¢t exactly bring rewards to those who undertake tough changes. In Act Three, King Lear finds himself caught in a storm that represents both the insanity infecting King Learââ¬â¢s mind and the process of change that has been placed before him. Once again nature symbolises change; where it is seen to be the sinister quality used to exploit the weaknesses of the protagonist and is inescapable and inevitable, just like nature itself. Learââ¬â¢s decline in power over both his kingdom and his family reduces him to a weak, mad man and through the storm Lear has found himself unable to stop the change that is occurring in his kingdom and that he cannot hide from the destruction that it is bringing. Willingly or not, King Lear must change himself and deal with the consequences of his actions, or drown trying. ââ¬ËCome mothers and fathers throughout the land and donââ¬â¢t criticise what you canââ¬â¢t understand. Your sons and your daughters are beyond your command. ââ¬â¢ This line from Dylanââ¬â¢s song was composed during the sixties when the younger generations were testing boundaries and moving away from the authority of their parents. Iââ¬â¢m sure most of us here have dealt with boundary issues with parents before, so we can all understand why Dylan was giving these parents ââ¬â who donââ¬â¢t understand or accept the changes within a society ââ¬â a choice to step back if they are unwilling to change and to help by ââ¬Ëlending a handââ¬â¢. This step towards change within both society and families is represented as the reward at the end of the tunnel; not only satisfying the younger generation, but to the whole community. In ââ¬ËLife as a Houseââ¬â¢, the house that is being built is used as a metaphor of the relationship between father and son. At the beginning, the house is a rundown little shack reflecting the state of George and Samââ¬â¢s relationship at the beginning. George is viewed as the naive parent who doesnââ¬â¢t understand their kid, and Sam is the child who is trying to move away from the authority of his parents. Weââ¬â¢re all been there and done that, so we all know what it feels like to be in Samââ¬â¢s position. But as the house is being pulled down and rebuilt, it symbolises how George rebuilds his relationship with Sam through the building of the house. The change shows on both the house and the familyââ¬â¢s relationship, by putting everything that was ever wrong right. This transformation of the house and the relationship is seen as the happy ending brought by change to the family. Lear doesnââ¬â¢t understand his daughters just as George doesnââ¬â¢t understand Sam. He doesnââ¬â¢t know his two eldest daughters well enough to realise the deception behind their love for him as they proclaim it, and he doesnââ¬â¢t understand his youngest daughter Cordelia as he doesnââ¬â¢t recognise just how much she really does love him. King Lear banishes Cordelia along with his loyal subject Kent with a growing ââ¬Ëblindnessââ¬â¢. He says to Cordelia, ââ¬Å"Hence, and avoid my sightâ⬠as he also says to Kent, ââ¬Å"Out of my sight. â⬠further showing his ignorance or ââ¬Ëblindnessââ¬â¢ of those who truly care about him. Throughout the play, Lear rebuilds his relationship with Cordelia by experiencing an inner change throughout the play, just as Sam changes himself when George rebuilds his relationship with him. But it is obviously too late for redemption as King Lear ââ¬â along with many others ââ¬â die as a consequence of interfering with the dark side of change. Change is inevitable. But itââ¬â¢s up to you to make the best of it. Because nothing worth having in this world comes easily, and although those changes may be difficult and problematic, they almost certainly bring rewards to those who undergo them. Even if they donââ¬â¢t always end the way you expect.

Wide Sargasso Sea is a novel known for its approach on the post-colonial view of the colonizer and the colonized. It connects the 1800s view of the English (Mr. Rochester) and the West Indies (Antoinette), in which it expresses the complex social standards of society. Although, this view is prevalent in the novel, another issue is clearly expressed throughout the novel, female enslavement. Women are constantly devalued in the novel, showing as not having the same importance or significance as the colonizers, which in this case is Mr. Rochester. Abraham Lincoln s Lifetime And Presidency - 945 Words
A humble, honest man who stayed true to his word, and a historical figure to be remembered indefinitely are both phrases that can be used to describe the way James McPherson views Abraham Lincoln throughout his lifetime and presidency. In writing Abraham Lincoln, McPherson sought to concisely capture the most important events of Lincolnââ¬â¢s life along with his input on why he felt that Lincoln was such a tremendous leader. The three main points of his argument include Lincolnââ¬â¢s prior government experience and stance on issues, his changes while in office, and the overall opinions of the general public during his time in office. Lincoln highly disliked his fatherââ¬â¢s way of parenting, giving him a basis for his future political endeavors. From a young age, Abraham was interested in learning and forwarding his education, much to the disdain of his farmer father who saw him as ââ¬Å"lazy [for his] preference of reading over workâ⬠(McPherson, 3). This quickly deri ved into a passion for politics in 1833, shortly after he became an adult and moved to New Salem. McPherson states that Lincoln, though not winning candidacy multiple times throughout his career ââ¬â from the legislature to the presidency ââ¬â was always a popular figure. His semi-radical way of thinking throughout the mid 1800s caught many Americans attentions. God, that must have been nice.â⬠I slurp on my Icee, my eyes fastened on Micha and Ethan working on the car on the opposite side of the garage. Her short shorts ride up and the bottom of her ass peeks out. After getting a drink, she drops back in her chair and opens it up, laughing at something Lila said. I adjust myself and slam the hood of the car down. ââ¬Å"I think she might be a little of both.â⬠*** ââ¬Å"Why are there so many more people tonight?â⬠Lila asks from the backseat, gaping at the cars parked up and down the road. ââ¬Å"It wasnââ¬â¢t this bad the last time we were here.â⬠The girl is scared shitless and I kind of feel bad for her. ââ¬Å"Mikey likes to draw a crowd.â⬠ââ¬Å"To watch him lose?â⬠she asks, prodding Ella with her elbow. ââ¬Å"Maybe,â⬠I say with a heavy sigh, psyching myself out as I climb out of the car. The three of them follow me out and Ella takes my hand as we hike through the crowd where Mikeyââ¬â¢s talking smack to some skater dude who drives a Honda in the middle of the crowd, showing off for everyone. Thereââ¬â¢s a bonfire burning over near The Hitch and people sitting on tailgates, drinking beers, waiting for the race to start. I push my way through the crowd, keeping a hold of Ellaââ¬â¢s hand. When we step out into the open, everyone looks at us and gossip starts flowing. Mikey stops talking and claps his hands loudly. ââ¬Å"Holy crap, I didnââ¬â¢t think youââ¬â¢d actually show up.â⬠ââ¬Å"Do I ever not show up?â⬠I say. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re the one that backed out the last time we tried to race.â⬠He spits on the ground and crosses his arms. ââ¬Å"So which one of youââ¬â¢s racing? The little one with the big mouth that got you into this mess? Or are you gonna race me yourself?â⬠Ella starts to move forward. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"I am.â⬠I squeeze her hand, pulling her behind me. ââ¬Å"Micha,â⬠she hisses. ââ¬Å"This is my thing. I can handle it.â⬠I shake my head, not looking at her. ââ¬Å"Letââ¬â¢s line up and get this over with.â⬠Mikey grins, rubbing his hands together. ââ¬Å"What? You eager to get your ass kicked?â⬠ââ¬Å"No, Iââ¬â¢m eager for you shut up.â⬠With that I turn away and head back to the car with Ella in tow. ââ¬Å"Micha Scott,â⬠she says, tugging on my arm and planting her feet in the dirt, trying to get me to stop walking. Ethan and Lila are a ways back and Ethanââ¬â¢s trying to explain to Lila the rules of racing. I keep walking forward, dragging her along with me, refusing to let her have her way this time ââ¬â not with this. ââ¬Å"Stop being all noble and just let me drive,â⬠she says hotly. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s much better for me to lose to him then for you to. Heââ¬â¢ll bug you about it for the rest of your life.â⬠I stop just in front of the car and turn to her and brush the pad of my thumb across her cheek. ââ¬Å"Hey, who said anything about losing?â⬠She gathers some strands of hair out of her face and stares at the front end of the car. The glow of the fire highlights the worry in her eyes. ââ¬Å"I know Ethan and you didnââ¬â¢t get everything fixed. You were working too fast and Iââ¬â¢m sure you didnââ¬â¢t do that great of a job.â⬠ââ¬Å"The carââ¬â¢s fine,â⬠I assure her. ââ¬Å"But you need to sit this one out.â⬠ââ¬Å"No way,â⬠she argues, folding her arms over her chest defiantly. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m going to at least sit in the passenger seat and ride with you. ââ¬Å" I shake my head. ââ¬Å"Not this time, pretty girl.â⬠She starts to fume, so I lean in and kiss her right in front of everyone, cupping the back of her head and grabbing her ass, letting people know sheââ¬â¢s mine. Her body trembles as she kisses me back, even when someone whistles. When I pull away, she has this glazed look in her eyes. ââ¬Å"Now take Lila and go sit over by the finish line.â⬠She opens her mouth, then seals her lips shut and nods. Ethan and her trade places and she walks off with Lila over toward the line. Once theyââ¬â¢re out of sight, Ethan says, ââ¬Å"You sure you want to do this?â⬠I nod, my gaze tracking the line of the road and the trees next to it. ââ¬Å"You sure you want to do this?â⬠ââ¬Å"Absolutely,â⬠he says. ââ¬Å"I have nothing better to do.â⬠We bump fists and climb into the car. I rev up the engine a few times, then inch it forward across the dirt and through the crowd toward the lineup area in front of The Hitch. ââ¬Å"Howââ¬â¢s the steering?â⬠he asks rolling down the window, and letting the night air flow in. I veer it from side to side, testing it. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s shaky.â⬠ââ¬Å"Left or right?â⬠ââ¬Å"To the right.â⬠ââ¬Å"Make sure you do your turnaround to the left then.â⬠I nod as we roll up to the lineup and Mikeyââ¬â¢s already waiting for us. Ella and Lila are just off to the side, near the trees, sitting on the tailgate of someoneââ¬â¢s truck. She has her eyes glued to us as Lila talks to her, swinging her legs. I thrum my fingers on the top of the steering wheel, eyeing the end of the road. ââ¬Å"Quit psyching yourself out,â⬠Ethan says and snatches up the iPod. ââ¬Å"I think itââ¬â¢s time for a little tunes.â⬠He scrolls through the music and ââ¬Å"The Distanceâ⬠by Cake flips on. He cranks it up so the base is bumping and we start nodding our heads. When it hits the chorus we start singing and Ethan taps his fingers on the dash, like heââ¬â¢s playing the drums. The more the song goes on, the more we get into it. I catch Ella laughing and shaking her head at us, because she knows this is Ethan and mines thing, but usually sheââ¬â¢s in the car with us. ââ¬Å"Hey, are we going to race?â⬠Mikey shouts, slipping out his window and looking at us from over the roof with his hands in the air. ââ¬Å"Or are we going to sit around and listen to music?â⬠I floor the pedal so loud the sound rumbles through the night and his eyes widen slightly. He gets back into his car and throttles his own pedal. Itââ¬â¢s half as loud and Ethan and I laugh at him. ââ¬Å"Dude, quit wasting time and get your girl over here to start us off,â⬠he calls out over the music. I turn it down a notch. ââ¬Å"Get Chandra to do it.â⬠ââ¬Å"No man, you know the rules,â⬠he says with a smirk. ââ¬Å"The girlfriend of the one being challenged has to start off the race.â⬠I roll my eyes, knowing Ellaââ¬â¢s not going to like this, the old or the new version. I slide out of the window, cup my hands around my mouth, and shout over the roof at her. ââ¬Å"Ella May, get your beautiful ass over here.â⬠Lila has her distracted and she jumps. Her eyebrows furrow as I wave her over. She holds up a finger to Lila and hops of the hood, looking at me perplexedly as she makes her way through the crowd and over to me. I sit back in the car as she reaches the window and she lowers her head down, looking into the cab. ââ¬Å"You have to start us off,â⬠I tell her and she instantly makes a face. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s the rules. You know that.â⬠ââ¬Å"Those rules are sexist,â⬠she says. ââ¬Å"Let Mikeyââ¬â¢s slutty girlfriend do it.â⬠ââ¬Å"You know heââ¬â¢s not going to let that happen.â⬠ââ¬Å"I could make him let it happen.â⬠I press my lips together as her spitfire personality burns through all her fake politeness. ââ¬Å"Can you just do it for me?â⬠She rolls her eyes, then leans in and kisses my cheek. ââ¬Å"But only for you.â⬠Then she backs out of the car, with an exaggerated sway of her hips, making fun of the ordeal, but still looking hot as hell in her little shorts. Ethan and I bust up laughing as she turns around with a big embellished grin on her face. ââ¬Å"Well, at least sheââ¬â¢s entertaining,â⬠he says, patting the side of the door with his hand to the beat of the music. I pump the gas a few times, my gaze attached to hers as she elevates her hands above her head. She looks at me as she counts down. When her arms drop, the tires squeal as we peel out. Ella I walk back through the cloud of dirt and hop on the tailgate with Lila. I spot Grantford through the crowd and when he sees me, he hurries away, ducking into the crowd, knowing Michaââ¬â¢s around. Lila swings her legs, taking in the surroundings. ââ¬Å"What was that about?â⬠ââ¬Å"Rules,â⬠I sigh, leaning forward so I can get a better view of the road. Itââ¬â¢s hard to tell because itââ¬â¢s dark, but it looks like Micha is winning. I start to grow restless the farther away the taillights get and I jump off the tailgate and pace the dirt. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re nervous,â⬠Lila observes. ââ¬Å"And youââ¬â¢re making me nervous.â⬠I bite on my fingernails, unable to settle down. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t know what my problem is. Usually, Iââ¬â¢m not this jumpy.â⬠But I think deep down, I know exactly what my problem is. My feelings for Micha have been freed and now they consume me, own me, bind me to him. The crowd starts moving, nearly trampling me as they stare down the road, waiting for the turnaround. I hear the scared tones in their voices first before the crash. Itââ¬â¢s like a train wreck, metal crushing and snapping apart. Lilaââ¬â¢s eyes snap wide. ââ¬Å"What the hell was that?â⬠I spin around and shove my way to the front of the crowd. There are a few cars on the side backing up onto the road. ââ¬Å"Shit,â⬠someone says. ââ¬Å"I think one of them wrecked.â⬠I feel my heart crumble as I take off down the road. ââ¬Å"Ella!â⬠Lila shouts. ââ¬Å"Where are you going?â⬠I keep running, stumbling through the dark, searching for their lights. My flip flops fall off somewhere, but I keep going, needing to know. Cars are pulling out behind me and headlights shine at my back. Seconds later, Mikeyââ¬â¢s car zooms by and he shouts something foul at me. Halfway down the road, the air turns to dirt and the sound of ââ¬Å"The Distanceâ⬠by Cake floods the air, only itââ¬â¢s stuck and keeps saying the same line over and over again. Spotting the outline of the car, I slow down. Suddenly, Iââ¬â¢m back to the night my mom died. The Chevelle is smashed against the trunk of a large tree, the windshield smashed to pieces, and two of the tires are blown out. I know whateverââ¬â¢s inside the car is bad, just like when I opened the bathroom door the night I found my mom and I wonââ¬â¢t be able to do anything about it. I almost turn away and run, not wanting to see it, but the passenger side door swings open and Ethan stumbles out, clutching at his upper arm. Thereââ¬â¢s a path of blood dripping down his arm and his cheek is scraped. I snap out of my own thoughts and rush to him. ââ¬Å"Are you okay?â⬠ââ¬Å"Ella, go get some help.â⬠He coughs, nearly buckling to his knees. ââ¬Å"No.â⬠My voice comes out sharp and high-pitched and vomit burns at the back of my throat. His head is flopped back against the headrest and turned away from me and his arms are slack to the side. He groans, his face reddening as he hunches over and his girlfriend runs to his side to coddle him. I start to leave when he straightens back up. Cradling his injured guy parts, he charges, ready to hit me. Ethan blocks him and shoves him back with his good arm. ââ¬Å"If you touch her, Iââ¬â¢ll slam my good fist into your face.â⬠This is not the first time heââ¬â¢s had to say that to someone on my behalf. Mikey backs down from the fight, muttering something about it not being worth it as Benny helps Micha out of the car. The branch is out of his shoulder. Left in its place is a hole, which is bleeding down his arm and shirt, but heââ¬â¢s alive and breathing and thatââ¬â¢s all that matters. We get him into the front seat of Bennyââ¬â¢s GTO and then Ethan and Lila get in the back. Micha has me sit on his lap, and he nuzzles his head into my chest. Doctor Faustus is a play written by Christopher Marlowe. It was first published in 1604. Later, the horse-courser enters Faustus study and accuses Faustus of false dealings because the horse had turned into a bundle of hay in the middle of a pond. After performing other magical, nonsensical tricks Faustus returns to his study, where at the request of his fellow scholars, he conjures up the apparition of Helen of Troy. An old man appears and tries to get Faustus to hope for salvation and yet Faustus cannot. He knows it is now too late to turn away from the evil and ask for forgiveness. When the scholars leave, the clock strikes eleven and Faustus realizes that he must give up his soul within an hour. As the clock marks each passing segment of time, Faustus sinks deeper and deeper into despair. Finally, the Doctor Faustus ends with Faustus awaiting the final hour of his life before he is carried off to eternal damnation by the agents of the underworld. Dawkins famously remarked that Doctor Faustus tells ââ¬Å"the story of a Renaissance man who had to pay the medieval price for being one. â⬠This quotation throws light on one of the playââ¬â¢s central themes- The conflict between Medieval ideals and the Renaissance ideals, and how Faustus is caught in the grip of the changing times. Certain aspects of the drama can be used to support an interpretation of Faustus as a Renaissance hero and other aspects suggest he is a medieval hero. According to medieval view of the world, everything revolved around God and religion whereas the Renaissance view put more emphasis on the individual, on classical learning, and on scientific inquiry into the nature of the world. In the middle ages any attempt or ambition to go beyond the assigned place was considered a great sin of pride. For the medieval person, pride was one of the greatest sins that could be committed. This concept was based upon the fact that Lucifers fall was the result of his pride when he tried to revolt against God. Thus, for the medieval person, aspiring pride became one of the cardinal sins. The Medieval View According to the medieval view, Faustus has a desire for forbidden knowledge. In order to gain more knowledge than he is entitled to, Faustus makes a contract with Lucifer, which brings about his damnation. In the prologue, Marlowe writes ââ¬Å"Till swollen with cunning, of a self-conceit, His waxen wings did mount above his reach. â⬠With these lines, he portrays an image of Icarus, who flew too close to sun which melted his waxed wings. This story was popular as an image of self-destructive will and ambition. Also, at the end of the play, Faustus learns that supernatural powers are reserved for the gods and that the person who attempts to handle or deal in magical powers must face eternal damnation. So, by the medieval standpoint, Faustus deserves his punishment hence the play is not so much a tragedy as it is a morality play. The ending is an act of justice, when the man who has transgressed against the natural laws of the universe is justifiably punished. The chorus at the end of the drama re-emphasizes this position when it admonishes the audience to learn from Faustus damnation and not attempt to go beyond the restrictions placed on humanity. The Renaissance View According to the Renaissance view, Faustus rebels against the limitations of medieval knowledge and the restriction put upon humankind decreeing that he must accept his place in the universe without challenging it. In his opening soliloquy in scene I, Faustus considers and rejects this medieval way of thinking. He resolves, in full Renaissance spirit, to accept no limits, traditions, or authorities in his quest for knowledge, wealth, and power. He even goes to the extent of selling his soul to Satan in his quest for enlightenment and absolute power. His desire, is to transcend the limitations of humanity and rise to greater achievements and heights. In the purest sense, Faustus wants to prove that he can become greater than he presently is. Because of his desire to go beyond human limitations, Faustus is willing to chance damnation in order to achieve his goals. Faustus, thus, may be considered as a ââ¬ËRenaissance Heroââ¬â¢- a hero of the new modern world, a world free of God, religion, and the limits that the medieval ideas had imposed on humanity. CONCLUSION Christopher Marlowe lived the time of the Middle Ages and the start of the Renaissance. These were two very different historical eras with quite different values, One of the reasons for the popularity of his play was that it dramatized the tug-of-war between the admonitions of the church and the exciting possibilities of knowledge suggested by the advance of science and the revival of classical learning. Marloweââ¬â¢s own attitude toward the clash between medieval and Renaissance values is quite ambiguous. He seems hostile toward the ambitions of Faustus, and keeps his tragic hero squarely in the medieval world, where eternal damnation is the price of human pride. The disappointment and mediocrity that follow Faustusââ¬â¢s pact with the devil, as he descends from grand ambitions to petty conjuring tricks, might suggest that the new, modern spirit, though ambitious and glittering, will lead only to a Faustian dead end. On the other hand, his renaissance ideologies are reflected in Faustusââ¬â¢s character, he hears Renaissance voices which tell him just the opposite extend the boundaries of human knowledge. Seek wealth and power. Live this life to the full because tomorrow youll be dead. This theme of eat, drink, and be merry for tomorrow we die was a popular theme during the Renaissance period.
