Analysis Of The Novel Wide Sargasso Sea - 772 Words

Wide Sargasso Sea is a novel known for its approach on the post-colonial view of the colonizer and the colonized. It connects the 1800s view of the English (Mr. Rochester) and the West Indies (Antoinette), in which it expresses the complex social standards of society. Although, this view is prevalent in the novel, another issue is clearly expressed throughout the novel, female enslavement. Women are constantly devalued in the novel, showing as not having the same importance or significance as the colonizers, which in this case is Mr. Rochester. The colonial dominance demonstrate how treacherous women are portrayed, as a result, the novel shows how Antoinette became impelled into her insanity. However, the pinnacle of Antionette’s abuse was when Mr. Rochester states, â€Å"I will destroy your hatred. My hate is colder, stronge r and you’ll have no hate to warm yourself. At that point the author illustrates that Antionette’s abuse was so severe that â€Å"all the pain went from her eyes† and â€Å"she was only a ghost†¦Nothing left but hopelessness† (Rhys 154). Behind all of this, Rochester wants to show that he is the dominate one in the house and he is the one that is in charge. To further prove his point, the novel shows that the colonizer (Mr. Rochester) compelled his power to control other women. Abiding from the psychological abuse, the colonizer (Mr. Rochester) controlled women through sexual methods. In one scenario, Mr. Rochester behaves like a slave owner in his sexual relationship with the servant, Amelie. In this situation, Mr. Rochester took advantage of Amelie because he is the dominant one in the house. He shows that he can use women for his sexual desires because of his dominance. This coincides the colonial point of view because the colonizer resembles women with the same principles. Th colonizers dehumanize women into labeling them as pieces of property. To make matters worse, Mr. Rochester knows that his wife is in the â€Å"thin partition room† next to them, but he commits adultery either way (Rhys 127). God, that must have been nice.† I slurp on my Icee, my eyes fastened on Micha and Ethan working on the car on the opposite side of the garage. The nice, polite one or the one who got you into this mess.† I look over at Ella again as she bends over to get a soda from the cooler behind the chairs. Her short shorts ride up and the bottom of her ass peeks out. After getting a drink, she drops back in her chair and opens it up, laughing at something Lila said. I adjust myself and slam the hood of the car down. â€Å"I think she might be a little of both.† *** â€Å"Why are there so many more people tonight?† Lila asks from the backseat, gaping at the cars parked up and down the road. â€Å"It wasn’t this bad the last time we were here.† The girl is scared shitless and I kind of feel bad for her. â€Å"Mikey likes to draw a crowd.† â€Å"To watch him lose?† she asks, prodding Ella with her elbow. â€Å"Maybe,† I say with a heavy sigh, psyching myself out as I climb out of the car. The three of them follow me out and Ella takes my hand as we hike through the crowd where Mikey’s talking smack to some skater dude who drives a Honda in the middle of the crowd, showing off for everyone. There’s a bonfire burning over near The Hitch and people sitting on tailgates, drinking beers, waiting for the race to start. I push my way through the crowd, keeping a hold of Ella’s hand. When we step out into the open, everyone looks at us and gossip starts flowing. Mikey stops talking and claps his hands loudly. â€Å"Holy crap, I didn’t think you’d actually show up.† â€Å"Do I ever not show up?† I say. â€Å"You’re the one that backed out the last time we tried to race.† He spits on the ground and crosses his arms. â€Å"So which one of you’s racing? The little one with the big mouth that got you into this mess? Or are you gonna race me yourself?† Ella starts to move forward. â€Å"I’m – â€Å" â€Å"I am.† I squeeze her hand, pulling her behind me. â€Å"Micha,† she hisses. â€Å"This is my thing. I can handle it.† I shake my head, not looking at her. â€Å"Let’s line up and get this over with.† Mikey grins, rubbing his hands together. â€Å"What? You eager to get your ass kicked?† â€Å"No, I’m eager for you shut up.† With that I turn away and head back to the car with Ella in tow. â€Å"Micha Scott,† she says, tugging on my arm and planting her feet in the dirt, trying to get me to stop walking. Ethan and Lila are a ways back and Ethan’s trying to explain to Lila the rules of racing. I keep walking forward, dragging her along with me, refusing to let her have her way this time – not with this. â€Å"Stop being all noble and just let me drive,† she says hotly. â€Å"It’s much better for me to lose to him then for you to. He’ll bug you about it for the rest of your life.† I stop just in front of the car and turn to her and brush the pad of my thumb across her cheek. â€Å"Hey, who said anything about losing?† She gathers some strands of hair out of her face and stares at the front end of the car. The glow of the fire highlights the worry in her eyes. â€Å"I know Ethan and you didn’t get everything fixed. You were working too fast and I’m sure you didn’t do that great of a job.† â€Å"The car’s fine,† I assure her. â€Å"But you need to sit this one out.† â€Å"No way,† she argues, folding her arms over her chest defiantly. â€Å"I’m going to at least sit in the passenger seat and ride with you. â€Å" I shake my head. â€Å"Not this time, pretty girl.† She starts to fume, so I lean in and kiss her right in front of everyone, cupping the back of her head and grabbing her ass, letting people know she’s mine. Her body trembles as she kisses me back, even when someone whistles. When I pull away, she has this glazed look in her eyes. â€Å"Now take Lila and go sit over by the finish line.† She opens her mouth, then seals her lips shut and nods. Ethan and her trade places and she walks off with Lila over toward the line. Once they’re out of sight, Ethan says, â€Å"You sure you want to do this?† I nod, my gaze tracking the line of the road and the trees next to it. â€Å"You sure you want to do this?† â€Å"Absolutely,† he says. â€Å"I have nothing better to do.† We bump fists and climb into the car. I rev up the engine a few times, then inch it forward across the dirt and through the crowd toward the lineup area in front of The Hitch. â€Å"How’s the steering?† he asks rolling down the window, and letting the night air flow in. I veer it from side to side, testing it. â€Å"It’s shaky.† â€Å"Left or right?† â€Å"To the right.† â€Å"Make sure you do your turnaround to the left then.† I nod as we roll up to the lineup and Mikey’s already waiting for us. Ella and Lila are just off to the side, near the trees, sitting on the tailgate of someone’s truck. She has her eyes glued to us as Lila talks to her, swinging her legs. I thrum my fingers on the top of the steering wheel, eyeing the end of the road. â€Å"Quit psyching yourself out,† Ethan says and snatches up the iPod. â€Å"I think it’s time for a little tunes.† He scrolls through the music and â€Å"The Distance† by Cake flips on. He cranks it up so the base is bumping and we start nodding our heads. When it hits the chorus we start singing and Ethan taps his fingers on the dash, like he’s playing the drums. The more the song goes on, the more we get into it. I catch Ella laughing and shaking her head at us, because she knows this is Ethan and mines thing, but usually she’s in the car with us. â€Å"Hey, are we going to race?† Mikey shouts, slipping out his window and looking at us from over the roof with his hands in the air. â€Å"Or are we going to sit around and listen to music?† I floor the pedal so loud the sound rumbles through the night and his eyes widen slightly. He gets back into his car and throttles his own pedal. It’s half as loud and Ethan and I laugh at him. â€Å"Dude, quit wasting time and get your girl over here to start us off,† he calls out over the music. I turn it down a notch. â€Å"Get Chandra to do it.† â€Å"No man, you know the rules,† he says with a smirk. â€Å"The girlfriend of the one being challenged has to start off the race.† I roll my eyes, knowing Ella’s not going to like this, the old or the new version. I slide out of the window, cup my hands around my mouth, and shout over the roof at her. â€Å"Ella May, get your beautiful ass over here.† Lila has her distracted and she jumps. Her eyebrows furrow as I wave her over. She holds up a finger to Lila and hops of the hood, looking at me perplexedly as she makes her way through the crowd and over to me. I sit back in the car as she reaches the window and she lowers her head down, looking into the cab. â€Å"You have to start us off,† I tell her and she instantly makes a face. â€Å"It’s the rules. You know that.† â€Å"Those rules are sexist,† she says. â€Å"Let Mikey’s slutty girlfriend do it.† â€Å"You know he’s not going to let that happen.† â€Å"I could make him let it happen.† I press my lips together as her spitfire personality burns through all her fake politeness. â€Å"Can you just do it for me?† She rolls her eyes, then leans in and kisses my cheek. â€Å"But only for you.† Then she backs out of the car, with an exaggerated sway of her hips, making fun of the ordeal, but still looking hot as hell in her little shorts. Ethan and I bust up laughing as she turns around with a big embellished grin on her face. â€Å"Well, at least she’s entertaining,† he says, patting the side of the door with his hand to the beat of the music. I pump the gas a few times, my gaze attached to hers as she elevates her hands above her head. She looks at me as she counts down. When her arms drop, the tires squeal as we peel out. Ella I walk back through the cloud of dirt and hop on the tailgate with Lila. I spot Grantford through the crowd and when he sees me, he hurries away, ducking into the crowd, knowing Micha’s around. Lila swings her legs, taking in the surroundings. â€Å"What was that about?† â€Å"Rules,† I sigh, leaning forward so I can get a better view of the road. It’s hard to tell because it’s dark, but it looks like Micha is winning. I start to grow restless the farther away the taillights get and I jump off the tailgate and pace the dirt. â€Å"You’re nervous,† Lila observes. â€Å"And you’re making me nervous.† I bite on my fingernails, unable to settle down. â€Å"I don’t know what my problem is. Usually, I’m not this jumpy.† But I think deep down, I know exactly what my problem is. My feelings for Micha have been freed and now they consume me, own me, bind me to him. The crowd starts moving, nearly trampling me as they stare down the road, waiting for the turnaround. I hear the scared tones in their voices first before the crash. It’s like a train wreck, metal crushing and snapping apart. Lila’s eyes snap wide. â€Å"What the hell was that?† I spin around and shove my way to the front of the crowd. There are a few cars on the side backing up onto the road. â€Å"Shit,† someone says. â€Å"I think one of them wrecked.† I feel my heart crumble as I take off down the road. â€Å"Ella!† Lila shouts. â€Å"Where are you going?† I keep running, stumbling through the dark, searching for their lights. My flip flops fall off somewhere, but I keep going, needing to know. Cars are pulling out behind me and headlights shine at my back. Seconds later, Mikey’s car zooms by and he shouts something foul at me. Halfway down the road, the air turns to dirt and the sound of â€Å"The Distance† by Cake floods the air, only it’s stuck and keeps saying the same line over and over again. Spotting the outline of the car, I slow down. Suddenly, I’m back to the night my mom died. The Chevelle is smashed against the trunk of a large tree, the windshield smashed to pieces, and two of the tires are blown out. Somehow it must have flipped around and the driver’s side took most of the impact. I know whatever’s inside the car is bad, just like when I opened the bathroom door the night I found my mom and I won’t be able to do anything about it. I almost turn away and run, not wanting to see it, but the passenger side door swings open and Ethan stumbles out, clutching at his upper arm. There’s a path of blood dripping down his arm and his cheek is scraped. THE MEDIEVAL AND RENAISSANCE CONFLICT Scholar R. M. Dawkins famously remarked that Doctor Faustus tells â€Å"the story of a Renaissance man who had to pay the medieval price for being one. † This quotation throws light on one of the play’s central themes- The conflict between Medieval ideals and the Renaissance ideals, and how Faustus is caught in the grip of the changing times. Certain aspects of the drama can be used to support an interpretation of Faustus as a Renaissance hero and other aspects suggest he is a medieval hero. According to medieval view of the world, everything revolved around God and religion whereas the Renaissance view put more emphasis on the individual, on classical learning, and on scientific inquiry into the nature of the world. In the middle ages any attempt or ambition to go beyond the assigned place was considered a great sin of pride. For the medieval person, pride was one of the greatest sins that could be committed. This concept was based upon the fact that Lucifers fall was the result of his pride when he tried to revolt against God. Thus, for the medieval person, aspiring pride became one of the cardinal sins. The Medieval View According to the medieval view, Faustus has a desire for forbidden knowledge. In order to gain more knowledge than he is entitled to, Faustus makes a contract with Lucifer, which brings about his damnation. In the prologue, Marlowe writes â€Å"Till swollen with cunning, of a self-conceit, His waxen wings did mount above his reach. † With these lines, he portrays an image of Icarus, who flew too close to sun which melted his waxed wings. This story was popular as an image of self-destructive will and ambition. Also, at the end of the play, Faustus learns that supernatural powers are reserved for the gods and that the person who attempts to handle or deal in magical powers must face eternal damnation. So, by the medieval standpoint, Faustus deserves his punishment hence the play is not so much a tragedy as it is a morality play. The ending is an act of justice, when the man who has transgressed against the natural laws of the universe is justifiably punished. The chorus at the end of the drama re-emphasizes this position when it admonishes the audience to learn from Faustus damnation and not attempt to go beyond the restrictions placed on humanity. The Renaissance View According to the Renaissance view, Faustus rebels against the limitations of medieval knowledge and the restriction put upon humankind decreeing that he must accept his place in the universe without challenging it. In his opening soliloquy in scene I, Faustus considers and rejects this medieval way of thinking. He resolves, in full Renaissance spirit, to accept no limits, traditions, or authorities in his quest for knowledge, wealth, and power. He even goes to the extent of selling his soul to Satan in his quest for enlightenment and absolute power. His desire, is to transcend the limitations of humanity and rise to greater achievements and heights. In the purest sense, Faustus wants to prove that he can become greater than he presently is. Because of his desire to go beyond human limitations, Faustus is willing to chance damnation in order to achieve his goals. Faustus, thus, may be considered as a ‘Renaissance Hero’- a hero of the new modern world, a world free of God, religion, and the limits that the medieval ideas had imposed on humanity. CONCLUSION Christopher Marlowe lived the time of the Middle Ages and the start of the Renaissance. These were two very different historical eras with quite different values, One of the reasons for the popularity of his play was that it dramatized the tug-of-war between the admonitions of the church and the exciting possibilities of knowledge suggested by the advance of science and the revival of classical learning. Marlowe’s own attitude toward the clash between medieval and Renaissance values is quite ambiguous. Richard’s father deserted his family leaving him and his mother to be on their own. Nathan, Richard’s dad was a peasant, and a share cropper. He did what the whites commanded him to do, follow the rules with no desire to succeed or progress in life, and repeat each and every demeaning and menial task day by day just to get by. This is the kind of society which ‘trained’ Nathan to be what the whites forced him to be, a dull and dumb individual with no sense of perception of what’s actually going on around him. Being counted as a subspecies, Richardà ¢â‚¬â„¢s father was conditioned to have no sense of hope, his entire life was based upon one thing, and that is falling in line with all other blacks and follows through with all the commands given by the white with no questions asked. This worked on every level imaginable, using sheer force and fear to tear down any sense of hope or positive thinking which blacks had. Just the thought of blacks surpassing a white individual was unthinkable. Why is this? It’s because it was deemed that way, it was how the society worked at that time. No one could question or challenge what whites could or can’t do, all of their thoughts are final. The ideas of being superior amongst the blacks were socially acceptable. And this included dehumanizing and cruel treatments. Richard wasn’t like the other kids that were in the black society. He was more free willed and ambitious. Richard was an independent individual from the start; not getting attached to anyone or in need of assistance of any sort. Richard was fond of education and learning. His quest for knowledge seemed, in the other black people’s eyes as a waste of time and energy, deemed to be helpful. But in some cases, Richard’s knowledge gets him in trouble, even worse getting hurt. An example from the book, is when Richard has to go to the store and buy groceries, but gets robbed numerous times by a gang of boys. The final time that Richard failed to get the groceries his mother told him, â€Å"Don’t come in here†¦You just stay right where you are, I’m going to teach your this night to stand up and fight for yourself†¦Don’t you come into this house until you’ve gotten those groceries.†(pg.24-25). One of Richard’s top quali ties was taught that night by his mother was perseverance. On the other hand we see the opposite, Shorty. Basically this amplifies my point of doing whatever possible to survive in this dreadful environment. He gets kicked in the gut just to get a quarter. My ass is tough and quarters is scarce.(end of ch12) At what point does a person go to violate self-ethics and morals, and go through with it just to survive. How far are you willing to go until you break? There is a delicate bond between the white people and white people, as humans we have limitations on how much we can handle mentally and physically. We can see from this example that Shorty is willing to degrade himself in order to get a quarter per kick. Shorty and Richard go off on a tangent about how to avoid being dehumanized and do something else. Richard offers to help him but Shorty’s hard headedness prevents him from to take heed the information given by Richard. But in Shorty’s remarks, he states that he is lazy to do anything and won’t change his ways of ho w he earns money. The readers recognize that Shorty has accepted the fact of being caught in the white power web of inferiority; he sees that there is no way out of this terrible situation. He went to school for half of his learning, and the half he was self-taught; by reading little bits and pieces he manages to learn quite a bit. Having knowledge and education grants Richard to be ahead of all the other black people. Wanting to be a writer, Wright pursues his dreams of moving North and writing novels. He takes the challenge by getting any job he can to raise money for himself to move to the north once and for all, and freeing himself from the clutches of racial prejudice and white rule. His ability to persevere also guided Richard toward his prosperity. Richard was a fighter and no matter what obstacle he faced, he manages to knock it down and march forth with his duties. Richard was always rebellious, from when he was really young to young adulthood. For example, when the principal at Richard’s school had asked him to give a speech to the audience of whites and blacks, Richard refused to read the principal’s pre-written speech. Just by reading the principal’s speech he was relieved at the same overly stressed out. He had the will and courage that other black individuals lacked to commence forth with this own speech. Richard was willing to leave school without a diploma just because of this unjust action. The whites knew that Richard was different; they knew that he challenged the â€Å"system† and he wasn’t afraid like the rest of the black people. The readers can sense fear coming from the whites, due to Richard’s attitude towards the whites and the boundaries that surround him. The white’s try to cover up their fear and pushing racism by being cruel and demeaning towards the entire black population. We can see in the scene where Richard gets a new job at the optical place, and his co-workers mistreat him just because the boss is kind to Richard. Later Richard leaves the job knowing that his co-workers would ‘kill’ him if told the boss what happed to him. The hostility portrayed by his co-workers was so great that Richard couldn’t handle it anymore, and was forced to leave his job. All of these events mold Richard into the hardy character he is known for. Wright’s intellect was unmatched by the blacks, and well as his rebellious features and conduct. These were a few reasons that he was able to overcome his background of being black individual, and becoming a successful writer. Based on the fact that he was smart and independent, and his perseverance guided him to reach this status, to which all blacks should uphold to. By reading Black Boy it becomes very clear to the reader how life as a black minority is very difficult. We can recognize all the struggles they faced and how Richard challenged and managed to surpass what no blacks ever did.

During the period of 1850-1861, America was struggling to stay united as debates over several major issues started to take the forefront. After the war with Mexico ended in 1848, America gained the territories of Texas, New Mexico, and California through the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Soon after, disputes over whether these states should be free states or slave states erupted. By 1850, a solution was found in the Compromise of 1850 where California would become a free state, and New Mexico and Texas would have popular sovereignty, allowing them to decide for themselves whether they would be slave states or not. The Fugitive Slave Act was also written in 1850 in an effort to satisfy southern slave owners by requiring northerners to return any runaway slaves back to their owners in the South. The combination of the Compromise of 1850 and The Fugitive Slave Act, along with debates over the Constitution and popular sovereignty, started to impact the unity of the nation and potentially split the North and South even more. The actions of the government during the period of 1850-1861 contributed to the deteriorating conditions of America, particularly in the Constitution and the Fugitive Slave Act. In 1852, William Lloyd Garrison expressed the idea that the Constitution influenced slavery in America despite the fact that nothing about slavery was directly mentioned. He feels that a government in support of slavery is corrupt and cannot be trusted and that the people need to overthrow it. The Constitution’s inability to stop slavery leads to division among the people who support slavery and the people who do not. In this way, the government played a part in the weakening of the Union (Doc. E). The Fugitive Slave Act, a part of the Compromise of 1850, helped intensify tension between the pro-slavery South and anti-slavery North. In Boston, freed slaves had to be warned to avoid any interaction with watchmen and police in Boston, who now had the ability to send them back into slavery. The Fugitive Slave Act further divided the North and South because it forced the anti-slavery North to go against its beliefs and involve itself in the institution of slavery instead of preventing it (Doc. C). Ralph Waldo Emerson further describes the immortality of the Fugitive Slave Act by comparing the government’s varying  disciplines on the institution. In 1807, Congress had banned the importation of slaves into America, but by 1850, they encouraged the capturing of freed slaves in the North and sending them back into servitude. This contradiction adds to division because it proved to northerners that the government would bend to the South’s desire to keep slavery. Emerson viewed this act as immoral and felt that if the government implemented it, the Union would immediately fall apart. In a way, Emerson’s view was not wrong, as the Fugitive Slave Act did contribute to increasing division between the North and South over slavery (Doc. D). Another issue that led to the crumbling of the Union was the debate over popular sovereignty. Popular sovereignty embodied the idea that the new states coming into the Union should be allowed to decide for themselves whether they would allow slavery or not. This belief is rooted in the Compromise of 1850, which was basically an effort to maintain the balance between the slave states in the South and the free states in the North. A map depicting the Compromise of 1850 shows the slave states in the South, the free states in the North, and the new territories that could be swayed either way. The reason the possibility of popular sovereignty in these territories caused controversy was because whatever way they went, they could potentially upset the balance between the North and South, which could lead to serious conflict over slavery (Doc. A). President Jefferson Davis further explains the debate over popular sovereignty in terms of the Constitution. Although the Constitution does address state power through amendments, it was unable to prevent opinions regarding a lack of state sovereignty from developing in the North. This proves that the Constitution was becoming weak and unable to meet the conditions of that time period. Also, the states are beginning to feel entitled to their rights and are forgetting that the Union existed based on a combination of the states (Doc. H). The Kansas and Nebraska Act of 1854 created the territories of Kansas and Nebraska and gave the settlers of that land the right to decide whether they would be slave states or not. This act increased tensions around slavery amongst the settlers and thus led to violence because some settlers were advocates of slavery and then others were against slavery. The artist of this cartoon depicted a freesoiler being held down by Presidential  nominee James Buchanan and Democratic senator Lewis Cass on the â€Å"Democratic Platform,† which was a shot at the Democratic Party because many blamed them for the increase in violence towards anti-slavery settlers in Kansas. The platform is labeled with â€Å"Kansas,† â€Å"Cuba,† and â€Å"Central America,† which represents the alleged Democratic goals of spreading slavery outside of America. The freesoiler is being fed a slave by Democratic senator Stephen A. Douglas and President Franklin Pierce. This cartoon shows that many people felt that the new states were being forced to accept slavery by the Democratic Party (Doc. F). Sectionalism increased tensions between the North and South and thus contributed to the failure of the Union by splitting the nation apart on several key issues. Sectionalism is when a part of the nation, either the North or South, puts their owns interests over the whole nation’s concerns. Sectionalism can often lead to states breaking apart from the Union. From the period 1850-1861, the North and South were split over slavery and whether the new territories being added to the Union should be slave or free. The only way to prevent conflict over sectional issues is to have a strong Constitution that addresses the needs of each area of the country. Without that, the Union will inevitably fail (Doc. B). President James Buchanan, who felt that in order to preserve the Union, the Constitution must protect the rights of the South, further explains this idea. If the needs of the states are not met, then the states have the right to withdraw from the Union because of their own sovere ignty. To prevent the succession of the South, Congress should recognize slavery, protect the right of slavery in new territories, and support the Fugitive Slave Act (Doc. G). President Abraham Lincoln felt that sectionalism and succession would lead to the demise of the Union. To even consider leaving the Union, a state has to feel that it is better than all the others and will be more successful on its own. However, no state in America had ever been on its own, leading President Lincoln to believe that no state can truly fend for itself (Doc. I). Because it was believed that succession would lead to the failure of the Union, sectionalism was discouraged because it would split the country apart. In reality, sectionalism occurred anyway and resulted in the North and South being divided based on slavery. The actions of the government along with conflicts over popular sovereignty in new territories and sectionalism contributed to increasing tensions between the North and South, especially over slavery, and overall weakened the Union. The actions the government took during the period of 1850-1861 influenced the division between the North and South over slavery by passing the Compromise of 1850 and the Fugitive Slave Act. The Compromise of 1850 created controversy over popular sovereignty because it would give new states the right to decide for themselves if they would support slavery or not. The combination of government actions and popular sovereignty resulted in sectionalism, which furthered the divide between the North and South.

Understanding Bioprinting and Its Applications Bioprinting, a type of 3D printing,  uses cells and other biological materials as â€Å"inks† to fabricate 3D biological structures. Bioprinted materials have the potential to repair damaged organs, cells, and tissues in the human body. In the future, bioprinting may be used to build entire organs from scratch, a possibility that could transform the field of bioprinting. Materials That Can Be Bioprinted Researchers have studied the bioprinting of many different cell types, including stem cells, muscle cells, and endothelial cells. Several factors determine whether or not a material can be bioprinted. First, the  biological materials must be biocompatible with the materials in the ink and the printer itself. In addition, the mechanical properties of the printed structure, as well as the time it takes for the organ or tissue to mature, also affect the process.   Bioinks typically fall into one of two types: Water-based gels, or hydrogels, act as 3D structures in which cells can thrive. Hydrogels containing cells are printed into defined shapes, and the polymers in the hydrogels are joined together or crosslinked so that the printed gel becomes stronger. These polymers can be naturally derived or synthetic, but should be compatible with the cells.Aggregates of cells that  spontaneously fuse together into tissues after printing. How Bioprinting Works The bioprinting process has many similarities with the 3D printing process. Bioprinting is generally divided into the following steps:   Preprocessing: A 3D model based on a digital reconstruction of the  organ or tissue to be bioprinted is prepared. This reconstruction can be created based on images captured non-invasively (e.g. with an MRI) or through a more invasive process, such as a series of two-dimensional slices imaged with X-rays.     Processing: The tissue or organ based on the 3D model in the preprocessing stage is printed. Like in other types of 3D printing, layers of material are successively added together in order to print the material.Postprocessing: Necessary procedures are performed to transform the print into a functional organ or tissue. These procedures may include placing the print in a special chamber that helps cells to mature properly and more quickly. Types of Bioprinters As with other types of 3D printing, bioinks can be printed several different way.  Each method has its own distinct advantages and disadvantages. Inkjet-based bioprinting acts similarly to an office inkjet printer. When a design is printed with an inkjet printer, ink is fired through many tiny nozzles onto the paper. This creates an image made of many droplets that are so small, they are not visible to the eye. Researchers have adapted inkjet printing for bioprinting, including methods that use heat or vibration to push ink through the nozzles. These bioprinters are more affordable than other techniques, but are limited to low-viscosity bioinks, which could in turn constrain the types of materials that can be printed.Laser-assisted bioprinting uses a laser to move cells from a solution onto a surface with high precision. The laser heats up part of the solution, creating an air pocket and displacing cells towards a surface. Because this technique does not require small nozzles like in inkjet-based bioprinting, higher viscosity materials, which cannot flow easily through nozzles, can be used. Laser-assisted bioprinting also allo ws for very high precision printing. However, the heat from the laser may damage the cells being printed. Furthermore, the technique cannot easily be scaled up to quickly print structures in large quantities. Extrusion-based bioprinting uses pressure to force material out of a nozzle to create fixed shapes. This method is relatively versatile: biomaterials with different viscosities can be printed by adjusting the pressure, though care should be taken as higher pressures are more likely to damage the cells. Extrusion-based bioprinting can likely be scaled up for manufacturing, but may not be as precise as other techniques.Electrospray and electrospinning bioprinters  make use of electric fields to create droplets or fibers, respectively. These methods can have up to nanometer-level precision. However, they utilize very high voltage, which may be unsafe for cells. Applications of Bioprinting Because bioprinting enables the precise construction of biological structures, the technique may find many uses in biomedicine. Researchers have used bioprinting to introduce cells to help repair the heart after a heart attack as well as deposit cells into wounded skin or cartilage.  Bioprinting has been used to fabricate heart valves for possible use in patients with heart disease, build muscle and bone tissues, and help repair nerves. Though more work needs to be done to determine  how these results would perform in a clinical setting, the research shows that bioprinting could be used to help regenerate tissues during surgery or after injury. Bioprinters could, in the future, also enable entire organs like livers or hearts to be made from scratch and used in organ transplants. 4D Bioprinting In addition to 3D bioprinting, some groups have also examined 4D bioprinting, which takes into account the fourth dimension of time. 4D bioprinting  is based on the idea that the printed 3D structures may continue to evolve over time, even after they have been printed. The structures may thus change their shape and/or function when exposed to the right stimulus, like heat. 4D bioprinting may  find use in biomedical areas, such as making blood vessels by taking advantage of how some biological constructs fold and roll. The Future Although bioprinting could help save many lives in the future, a number of challenges have yet to be addressed. For example, the printed structures may be weak and unable to retain their shape after they are transferred to the appropriate location on the body. Furthermore, tissues and organs are complex, containing many different types of cells arranged in very precise ways. Current printing technologies may not be able to replicate such intricate architectures. Finally, existing techniques are also limited to certain types of materials, a limited range of viscosities, and limited precision. Problems of farmers in present day of Life Essay We think of farms as always being there. Food will always be grown. Our countryside will be full of cows and crops just like it always has been. The fact is that this may not be true. Farmers are faced with the growing costs to run their farms. These costs include taxes, insurance, and regular farm costs. When we visited a farm, the farmer said that this was one of his main concerns. and not the weather conditions like we thought. Farmers are being offered big money to sell their farms. Companies that are building lots of houses and condominiums buy up farm land so that city people can move into the country. They break up the farm land into smaller pieces of land. In the picture on the right, you will see an example of how housing developments are gradually taking over valuable farm land. With more people traveling and moving into the country, more roads need to be built. Roads take up land, too. Many times the land is farmland. So, the farmer is offered lots of money to sell their land. The high taxes and farm costs make this look good to farmers. Another big threat is roads that go around cities. These are called loops or bypasses. These use up farm land, parks, and green spaces edging our cities. This has had a terrible track record over the past few years, although many mayors and members of Congress now want to build more. As a nation, we should stop giant highways and promote new transportation that helps the economy and the environment. We interviewed former Congressman and former head of the New Jersey Turnpike Authority Neil Gallagher who said, New Jersey used to make awful smells that would spread across the area from a major pig farm in Secaucus. A plan then was made by Governor Al Driscoll to run a highway through New York State to the crossing of the Delaware River to take out the traffic on Highway Number 1. In order to build these roadways, all the roads had to connect and pass through Secaucus which had to be the hub of the highway. In order to do this, the government had to buy all the pig farms in Secaucus. Mr. Gallagher remembers that several laws were passed: A new organization was formed called the New Jersey Turnpike Authority. Creation of an organization that would buy the farms at a fair price. Allowing the turnpike to sell bonds to raise money to buy the land and  build the road. The bonds would be paid for by the tolls that were collected on the turnpike. [Two thirds of the money came from out-of-state drivers.] The result of the New Jersey Turnpike Authority closing down the farms was that we lost the farm land, and the new use of that land resulted in the greatest economic boom that the state of New Jersey had ever seen. The road itself created all new jobs throughout the state and in Secaucus itself. Let’s use the New Jersey Meadowlands sports complex as an example. This land became some of the most valuable land in the metropolitan area when the Meadowlands [including Giant Stadium, the race track, and Continental Arena] was built where pig farms used to be. Mr. Gallagher feels that, â€Å"Sometimes the price of progress is finding a better use of land that benefits more people at the expense of a more rural and quiet way of life.
